I said earlier this morning that “You are not defined by circumstances, you are defined by what you make of them.” That was a mash-up of a response that my friend Rob Korotky said on my Facebook post (http://www.facebook.com/scaddude/posts/483874278187), and of two quotes that I’ve lived by. These quotes, both of which say pretty much the same thing, were uttered by characters from two now-canceled television shows, which doesn’t preclude them from being very true, and very sage ways of thinking.
As spoken by Angel, played by David Boreanaz, and written by the evil genius Joss Whedon for his show (the best vampire TV show that is no longer airing) Angel:
“If nothing we do matters, all that matters is what we do. ’cause that’s all there is. What we do, now, today.”
And the other, as spoken by Bennett Halverson, played by Summer Glau, also written by the no-good Joss Whedon for his show Dollhouse:
“We literally become what we do, not what we’ve done, or what we will do. We’re best defined by our actions in the moment.”
Life is filled with twists and turns, and you don’t have a map. The only thing you can do is look at the road you’re on and just hold on tight and steer.
